In broad terms, the research programme in the Materials Chemistry Group of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath combines advanced computer modelling methods with synthesis and structural techniques in the study of new materials for lithium- and sodium-ion batteries. The Research leaders are Prof Saiful Islam and Prof Mark Weller.

A range of systems are being investigated including new polyanionic-type cathodes (e.g. phosphates, silicates, sulfates), oxide-based anodes (e.g. titanates) and solid-state electrolytes (e.g. NASICON type). Fundamental materials properties are being explored such as crystal structures, defect chemistry, ion diffusion pathways, electronic structure and surface behaviour.
