TUDelft – faculty of Applied Sciences

The Faculty of Applied Sciences is the largest Faculty within TU Delft. Research at the Faculty is fundamental and application-oriented in nature and spread over six departments. The research on electrochemical energy storage is carried out at two departments within the faculty of Applied Sciences (TNW), i.e. Chemical Engineering (ChemE) and Radiation Science and Technology (RST).
the focus of RST’s research is on energy and health. However various our interests, whether they be materials, sensors and instrumentation, energy and sustainable production or health, all our research is somehow related to radiation. The close collaboration with the Reactor Institute Delft guarantees access to the reactor and the irradiation facilities. We have wonderful plans for the future, with more and even better facilities, under the acronym OYSTER. In order to keep up with European and global developments, the Netherlands needs a strong knowledge centre with its own small, but significant, radiation source and associated instrumentation. Therefore we present our ambition for the future OYSTER: Optimised Yield - for Science, Technology and Education - of Radiation. The work on electrochemical energy storage is part of the section Storage of Electrochemical Energy (SEE). SEE aims at understanding of fundamental processes in, and the improvement, development and preparation of battery materials.

Chemical Engineering (ChemE)

The mission of ChemE is to generate knowledge and educate people in the area of nano chemical engineering to improve the quality of life for a sustainable society, focusing on energy, water, health and environment. Building upon its proven strength in Chemical Engineering, the Department develops the science and technology of functional nanostructured systems, from molecules up to the design of products and processes. Scientific and technological breakthroughs are attained through international and multidisciplinary teamwork. Our inspiring and adventurous environment facilitates growth of our students and employees as responsible and innovative personalities. The work on electrochemical energy storage is part of the section Organic Materials and Interfaces (OMI). OMI’s research interest lies at solid-liquid, solid-gas and solid-solid interfaces with an emphasis on the control and fine-tuning of the interface properties. This can be achieved, for example, by an induced change of the physical properties of the interface or by surface (bio) functionalization. We study and develop a range of different surface modifications and their characterizations. We mainly focus on fundamental chemistry with a clear direction toward viable applications.

Radiation Science & Technology (RST)

FAME investigates functional and structural materials with a view toward practical applications. The main focus is on the relation between structure, dynamics and function on atomic and nano scales.
