Postgraduate Scholarship in sulphur-based chemistries for energy storage solutions

A funded PhD position is available in the field of energy storage materials, focussing on sulphur-rich battery components. Lithium-sulphur (LiS) batteries are using sulphur and sulphur composite materials as the cathode, while Li-ion batteries use sulphides and sulphates as negative and positive electrodes. The same is true for Na-ion batteries. In addition, binders and electrolytes can contain sulphur. The latter components are less studied than the electrode materials.
The aim of the project is to develop inks for screen printed composite electrodes with applications to different energy storage solutions. The inks can be applied to Li or Na-ion batteries as well as LiS cells. To characterise the materials novel synchrotron techniques will be developed allowing us to determine the electronic structure and geometry as the batteries are cycled in-operando.
The successful candidate will be based at the University of Kent's main campus in Canterbury but will collaborate with groups both in the UK and around Europe. The candidate is expected to travel to both Diamond Light Source (DLS) in Oxfordshire, UK, as well the ESRF in Grenoble, France. The student will be part of the Materials Energy and Electronics (MEE) group in the School of Physical Sciences, but the research is also associated with projects run in collaboration with the School of Engineering and Digital Art (EDA) at the University of Kent.
This PhD Studentship is due to start in September, 2020.
Entry requirements and Funding: Applicants should have or expect to obtain a first or upper second class honours degree (or equivalent) in Chemistry, Physics, Material Sciences or a related subject. This project will either be funded as an EPSRC PhD scholarship or a Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarship. In either case funding will be offered at the standard UK Research Councils' rate (currently £X; to cover living costs) and will additionally cover tuition fees at the Home/EU rate (currently £X per annum). The Vice Chancellor’s Research Scholarship is available to both UK and EU nationals and will involve undertaking teaching/demonstrating duties during the period of study.
