Postdoc positions available at Physics, Chalmers University of Technology

Materials for Energy Applications and its special work-package coined “Chalmers Battery Flagship”. Therefore we now need postdocs for the following projects:
Characterization of CNT/electrolyte systems for structural batteries (1+1 year)
Within a large Swedish network (KOMBATT II) the aim is to create light-weight structural load carrying energy storage based on novel materials. Carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) are to be used as negative electrodes and covered by a thin electrolyte layer, either ionic liquid or polymer based. The creation of the electrolyte and its characterization are crucial and challenging, using a feed-back loop based on different kinds of microscopy, Raman and IR spectroscopy, as well as differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), etc. Special emphasis is to be given to the CNT/electrolyte interface. Furthermore, the same approaches will be used for investigations on single-ion conducting polymer electrolytes.
Soft matter for batteries (1+1 year)
One intrinsic key to more performant batteries is to increase the content of active materials and work towards lighter total solutions, while maintaining ease of fabrication and focus on sustainable approaches/materials. Here totally ‘soft’ batteries will be targeted by: i) creating active components by electrospinning, ii) binder-free cathodes and catholytes, and iii) soft nano-particle based electrodes. The project is part of Chalmers Battery Flagship.
Metal electrodes and engineered surfaces (1+1 year)
The quest for safe and efficient use of metal electrodes for various battery concepts demands to control the stability vs. dendrite growth and the stripping/plating properties in general. Here the effects of different ways to alter/engineer the metal electrode surfaces together with new electrolytes and additives will be explored. The project is part of Chalmers Battery Flagship.Starting date: ASAP, but preferably Spring 2017.
