HZB
HELMHOLTZ-ZENTRUM BERLIN FÜR MATERIALIEN UND ENERGIE (HZB)

Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin für Materialien und Energie GmbH (HZB) covers the range from basic materials science to providing solutions to the global energy challenge. Next generation solar cells based on new materials are explored and innovative device concepts are scaled up and developed towards practical applications. Quantum and functional materials are investigated towards future more efficient information technologies. HZB’s science driven infrastructures and CoreLabs allow for in-situ, in-system and operando investigations of materials and processes at all relevant length and time scales. This expertise also feeds into the research on photoelectrochemical energy conversion and electrochemical storage.
HZB’s goal in battery research is to develop improved materials, to characterize battery materials under working conditions, and to design cells of next-generation batteries (beyond lithium-ion) featuring advanced characteristics in terms of cost-saving potential, energy density, safety and lifetime in comparison to conventional lithium-ion concepts.
