Towards stable Na-O2 and Li-O2 Batteries

Rechargeable oxygen (O2) batteries such as lithium-oxygen (Li-O2) and sodium-oxygen (Na-O2) batteries hold promise to increase the gravimetrical energy density compared to that of Li-ion batteries. However, they have shown to suffer from different challenges regarding electrolyte solvent and salt decomposition. The fundamental understanding of O2 reactions in aprotic electrolytes is therefore a field which requires further investigations. The goal of this postdoctoral research project is to generate a better understanding of parameters governing chemical and electrochemical reaction in metal-O2 batteries. The knowledge obtained will be implemented in Na-O2 and Li-O2 batteries to suppress side reactions.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. in electrochemistry, battery materials or within a related field.
Demonstrated experience in battery assembly and testing and associated electrochemical characterization methods. Excellent team work, written and oral communication skills. Prior experience using X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) or Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy is an advantage for this project.
